Two Victims Named in the Ivy League School Incident as Police Persist in Manhunt for Gunman.

Two students who lost their lives in Saturday’s tragic incident on the university campus were honored at the start of the week – while an intensive search for their assailant persisted following the freeing by local law enforcement of the single suspect questioned in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, as stated by the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which offered condolences for her at a ceremony on Sunday.

Cook was second-in-command of Brown’s branch of the campus GOP group, as the club stated. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also posted words of sorrow online, remarking: “It's indescribable. Thinking of her loved ones and companions, above all her mom and dad.”

The Second Victim

The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the prestigious university, according to relatives.

Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He harbored grand aspirations of entering the field of neurosurgery and assisting patients,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a tribute.

What Happened

An additional nine individuals were injured in the weekend shooting in the school of engineering of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.

Officials stated by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-man taken into custody in a raid at a hotel about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was released from custody.

“A perpetrator remains free,” stated Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you have to regroup and go in another, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last day or so.”

Public Fear

Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, noted: “This will probably generate new worry for our city”.

The assailant began shooting inside a room in the building on Saturday, shooting over four dozen bullets from a handgun, a law enforcement official told the news agency.

Law enforcement that raided the lodging recovered two handguns and magazines when the suspect was taken into custody, as was reported.

The Wounded Victims

Regarding the nine injured, one pupil was allowed to go home, said Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in grave but unchanging health, and one was in critical condition, authorities stated on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a independent school in the city of Durham, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

Additional Memorials

Tributes were paid to Cook at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only here growing up... but at the university she was a shining example in that particular place as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the club. “Ella was recognized for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and peers,” he said.

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by Umurzokov’s death in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to the Umurzokov family, companions, and schoolmates and lament the passing of his promising future.”

The weekend's murders at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US higher education institution with about thousands of bachelor's and three thousand graduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 mass shootings reported in the US so far in 2025, according to records.
