Former FBI head James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and impeding a congressional proceeding.

Mr Comey's legal representative filed the plea on his behalf in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

His attorney announced he would try to have the proceedings thrown out for several causes including that his the accused, a critic of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

Mr Comey was indicted just days after Trump urged his attorney general to proceed against him.

Judicial Process

During the hearing on Wednesday, his attorney the legal representative informed the magistrate they intended to present several petitions to throw out the proceedings before a legal hearing, claiming the government's case was vindictive and that a US attorney was wrongfully appointed to take over the proceedings.

The former director's legal matter was originally overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under scrutiny from Trump after his probe into an additional opponent - NY AG Letitia James - failed to initiate prosecution.

Courtroom Atmosphere

The former director came across in positive mood as he walked into the court on Wednesday, speaking with his lawyers and being lighthearted. He was supported by his spouse, Mrs Failor and offspring Maureen Comey, a government attorney who the Trump administration recently fired.

After listening to the court read his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in the courtroom on mid-week, the defendant was questioned if he understood the accusations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he told the judge.
